At Our Spirit, we believe in the basis for the Bible and the Good News is love. The Bible contains many messages. Some are full of love, life and hope. Others are dark and could be considered vengeful and mean. Some people insist that to be a true Christian, one must believe every sentence and sentiment in the Bible, but to do so, one must believe in contradictions. For instance, did God create humans first or the universe first? Was the great flood 40 days or 150 days? People have a right to believe what they wish. But they don’t have a right to make others feel bad about themselves.
Judgment – that’s only for God to do.
Love – that’s what Jesus has asked everyone to do.
It can be difficult to hear people using the Bible against those who might be LGBTQ. Maybe it can be helpful to remember in the most basic ways that those negative arguments do not hold up.
Genesis was written to help God’s people build a nation, how to populate the land of Israel. Genesis is about procreation, not relationships.
Adam and Eve never married.
The real word is not abomination – it’s in Hebrew and it’s teboah, which only means unclean and nothing as harsh as abomination.
Even if one chooses to believe the word should be abomination and chooses to follow the holiness code where this passage occurs, then one must follow the entire holiness code, which includes stoning to death children who argue with their parents.
A straight person and a gay person have very different answers about what’s natural to him or her.
The Bible says in many places that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of pride and inhospitality.
Love yourself. Love them back. Know that you’re loved.
